The event which has been running since 2000, is set to take place Down Under in conjunction with Mardi Gras from February 17 to to March 5, with the Harbour City winning the hosting rights.

World Pride CEO Kate Wickett said it’s going to be a party unlike Sydney has ever seen and that those planning on attending should ‘bank their sleep’.

The special moment during the New Year’s Eve fireworks spectacular came as beloved Aussie drag Queen Courtney Act performed Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

‘It’s 17 days of over 300 different events Everything from dance parties to the Human Rights Conference, visual arts, performing arts, poetry, theatre. You name it, we’ve got it,’ Ms Wickett said.

‘It says Australia and Sydney are an open and accepting and wonderfully diverse society and country.’

‘I just cannot wait to come and perform at the opening concert of Sydney WorldPride where, together, we’ll show the rest of the world how to party.’

Mon Schafter from ABC Queer said the event is like ‘gay Christmas’.

‘It’s a celebration of my beautiful, diverse, queer community. It’s like our time to shine,’ Schafter said.

‘I do love the fact that this visibility is reaching the far corners of Australia.

‘Queer kids growing up in regional and remote areas often don’t see queer visibility in their part of the world.’
