  • But Wolves swiftly rejected a £1m bid from the Black Cats for the defender
  • Newcastle have now stepped up with a £1.5m offer for the 21-year-old

Newcastle United are rivalling neighbours Sunderland for highly-rated Wolves defender Dion Sanderson.

Sportsmail revealed that Sunderland had opened the bidding at around £1million for the 21-year old centre back who was on loan with the League One side last season.

Wolves rejected that offer as they seek to hold out for £2m, however, Newcastle have now stepped up with a £1.5m offer.

Though that is likely to be rejected also, Newcastle’s interest is a clear threat to Sunderland’s hopes of signing Sanderson on a permanent basis.

The 21-year old enjoyed an impressive season on loan with Sunderland prior to a back injury curtailing his campaign.

It also coincided with Sunderland’s promotion push faltering and they are keen to bring him back on a permanent basis.

A number of Premier League and Championship sides are monitoring developments including Lee Bowyer’s Birmingham City.

Newcastle are also waiting for updates from Arsenal over whether centre back William Saliba will join them on loan despite interest from French champions Lille.
