Newcastle sweating over Callum Wilson’s hamstring problem following poor 2-0 Southampton loss

‘We hope that it’s not too bad’: Newcastle sweating over Callum Wilson’s hamstring problem as Steve Bruce confirms striker will have scan after limping off the Magpies’ 2-0 loss to Southampton on Friday night

  • Newcastle were haplessly beaten 2-0 by high-flying Southampton on Friday
  • Goals from Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong have the Saints a vital win
  • Callum Wilson limped off with a hamstring problem late in the game at St Mary’s
  • Steve Bruce has confirmed that the striker will have a scan to assess the problem

Steve Bruce has confirmed that Newcastle striker Callum Wilson suffered a hamstring injury in Friday’s loss at Southampton and is sweating over his fitness.

Wilson limped out of the Premier League match at St Mary’s in the 78th minute as the Magpies were well-beaten 2-0 by Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints – who moved to the top of the table thanks to goals from Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong.

The English forward has been a key member of Bruce’s side since his arrival from Bournemouth and joins ex-Cherries and current team-mate Ryan Fraser as a recent addition to Newcastle’s injury list.

Speaking about Wilson’s injury in his post-match press conference, Bruce said: ‘It’s a hamstring and we don’t know how bad it is yet. He needs a scan.

‘We’ll not know how bad it is until we get him scanned. We hope that it’s not too bad but we’ll see.’

When asked about Fraser’s training injury which ruled him out of the Southampton clash, the Magpies boss added: ‘Unfortunately, yesterday he came into the treatment room and wasn’t happy.

‘We then scanned it and revealed a small tear. He won’t make the internationals (for Scotland).’

Wilson moved to St James’ Park in a £20million move from Bournemouth and began his life in the north east positively, with six goals in his first seven league matches in black and white before Friday night’s encounter.

If the forward, who also has two league assists to his name this term, is out for an extended period then Newcastle will be left with Joelinton and Andy Carroll as the central striking options. The pair have a combined total of two goals all season.

Wilson’s expected period out is the least of manager Bruce’s worries, as the Magpies’ performance was not at the required level for their coach on Friday night.

Bruce told Sky Sports after the match: ‘Certainly the best team won and we didn’t get anywhere near where we were five days ago against Everton.

‘We didn’t look after the ball enough, we gifted them two goals and at this level you can’t do that. The one thing you don’t do is give one goal away. We gave away two.

‘The difficulty I have is that we go up and down too quickly. That’s one thing we have to resolve over the first 15 months I’ve been here. All of a sudden we don’t play well enough.’
