Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backs Gareth Southgate’s decision to leave Mason Greenwood out of latest England squad after his breach of Covid-19 rules by inviting two girls into team hotel in Iceland

  • Greenwood was left out of Southgate’s squad for upcoming international games
  • It came after he and Phil Foden were sent home in disgrace from Iceland
  • They breached coronavirus protocol by inviting two girls into the team hotel
  • Solskjaer says he has no issue with Southgate leaving Greenwood out
  • United manager believes it’s an opportunity for youngster to learn from errors

Mason Greenwood has to use his exclusion from the England squad to learn from his mistakes and fulfil his potential at international level, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Greenwood and Manchester City’s Phil Foden will miss the games against Wales, Belgium and Denmark after they were sent home in disgrace following their senior debuts in Iceland earlier this month for inviting girls into the team hotel.

Solskjaer had previously criticised Southgate and the FA for playing Greenwood against Manchester United’s wishes and exposing the 18-year-old to the media glare.

However, the United boss says that he respects Southgate’s decision to omit Greenwood from the latest squad following a clear-the-air discussion between the two managers last week.

And he believes the player needs to reflect on his error of judgment and decide what he wants from his career if he is going to have a bright future for England.

‘Mason is one of the top strikers of the future for England and I’m sure he’s going to play many games for England,’ said Solskjaer.

‘This now has been a learning curve for him. Mason has to reflect where he’s at and what he needs to do how to get where he wants to get.

‘I had a very nice chat with Gareth about our England players. Games at this point are important for players to get some minutes, but we’ll get loads of training in for Mason. I respect Gareth’s decision.’
