It has been a frustrating season so far for Pogba, who has found himself in and out of the United starting lineup in the Premier League.

After helping France to beat Portugal recently Pogba described playing for his national team as ‘a breath of fresh air’.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand says the comments won’t be welcomed by the club’s supporters but added that he understands Pogba’s point of view.

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: ‘You don’t want to hear it as a United fan, but I understand it. Going away with the national team can be a breath of fresh air.’

Pogba is no longer guaranteed a place in the United side, with the likes of Fred, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes often being selected by Solskjaer.

So far this season Pogba has made seven appearances in the Premier League but he has yet to score or provide an assist.
