Our pets are always there for us, never grumble or judge and love a cuddle.

In fact, they are so cherished by Britons that nearly a quarter prefer their furry friends to their other half.

A nationwide poll has also revealed two out of three say their pet is their best friend while nearly a fifth confess that their animal pal is more important than any person in their life.

Asked what makes their pets so special, nearly six in ten said it is because they don’t judge.

Meanwhile half think their dog or cat is more loyal than the humans in their life and almost as many, perhaps unsurprisingly, love the fact that their pet never answers back.

Three in ten value their feline or canine companion more than their best friend while over half reckon they have more photographs of their beloved pets than their family on their phone.

The poll of 1,500 British parents with dogs or cats found that half talk to pets about their feelings and nearly one in four even believe their four-legged friend has ‘special powers’.

These include knowing when their owner is sad or needs a cuddle and wanting to protect their family.

Nearly half of owners claim their pet can communicate with them with just a look, while a fifth think their animal pals understand them better than their other half ever could.

This bond runs so deep that over a third of dog and cat owners admit they would prefer a holiday with a pet over their loved ones.

Birthdays and Christmas are also special occasions for animals with nearly six in ten owners splashing out on gifts for them and a fifth even spending more than on loved ones.

And there’s plenty of affection in return with owners saying they enjoy about 14 hugs or embraces with their cat or dog every day, while they laugh eight times a day on average thanks to the antics of their pet.

And man’s best friend is also important for children with nine in ten owners saying their dogs have a special bond with their youngsters.

The survey was carried out by McDonald’s as part of its tie-up with the film DC League of Super-Pets, due for release in July.
