  • A family member gave him a baby onesie with the words ‘Daddy-Proof Shirt’

  • Many parents online said the shirt perpetuated the ‘incompetent dad stereotype’

A mum-to-be has shared her shock at the gift her husband received at their baby shower they thought was ‘offensive’ for implying he was going to be an ‘incompetent’ father.

The woman posted a photo to Reddit of a onesie a family member bought her husband that read ‘Daddy-Proof Shirt’ with arrows instructing dads where to put the baby’s head and arms and pointing to the ‘snap’ buttons.

‘This ‘gift’ my husband received at our baby shower,’ she captioned the picture which sparked a lively discussion about people’s perceptions of dads being ‘dumb’ when it comes to raising their own kids.

In the comments, the pregnant woman said the dad-to-be was ‘offended’ by the gift and she had received an equally distasteful present from the same family member when they got married.

‘He was offended just because this side of the family gave me a similar gift at our wedding shower,’ she said.

‘A black apron that read in embroidery ‘When I said ‘I do’ I didn’t mean the dishes!’ We’ve just never understood their humour honestly.’

‘I hate patronising crap like this. I’m a father, not a four-year-old,’ one dad said.

‘My wife and I were given one of these at our baby shower by family members that have treated me like I’m an idiot just for being a man. I am so sick of the clueless dad stereotype,’ another added.

‘Huzzah outdated stereotypes and treating fathers like disinterested morons,’ quipped a third.

Some thought the onesie would have been funny had there been different wording.

‘Why can’t it just say ‘idiot proof shirt’? Still make the joke without implying that dads are less parent than mums,’ one woman asked.

‘Take the ‘daddy-proof’ off of it and I can honestly say as a mum, I wouldn’t mind the hole labels so much,’ another admitted.

‘I remember being tired and putting it on wrong. My daughter’s dad did too. Parenting is tiring.’
