‘Thanks for the shirt!’: Pete Doherty thanks Jack Grealish as he claims footballer sent him England shirt stamped with midfielder’s surname

Pete Doherty was one of many famous faces to take to Instagram ahead of the Euros 2020 final on Sunday to share their support for England as the nation’s team prepared to face off against Italy.

And the Babyshambles frontman, 42, revealed he’d even been sent an England shirt by one of the team’s most talked about players – 25-year-old midfielder Jack Grealish.

Posing in front of a large body of water – most likely The Channel, near the star’s Normandy home – a grey haired Pete stood with his back to the camera, showing off a crisp shirt stamped with Grealish’s surname and jersey number. Hinting that he’d been personally gifted the top, Pete wrote: ‘Thanks to super @jackgrealish for the shirt! Go and bring it home!’

Football fan Pete was surrounded by lush greenery and rocked a grey flat cap, also including the hashtag ‘time for heroes’ in his post.

He teamed the top with jeans and flashed the camera the right side of his face while turning his head slightly towards the lens.

On the right side of the star’s neck, the letter A was visible. The doting father has the name Astile tattooed below his chin, a tribute to the 18-year-old son he shares with singer Lisa Moorish.

Despite two spot-kick saves from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, England’s Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed their efforts to hand the Italians a 3-2 shootout win after a nerve-shredding 120 minutes had ended 1-1.

Adele, Martine McCutcheon, and Stacey Solomon were leading the stars showing their support for the England team after the devastating loss.

Singer Adele, 33, took to Instagram after the game wearing a red England shirt and beamed while writing in the caption: ‘You did us so proud! You brought our game home and brought us all together.’

Loose Women star Stacey, 31, shared a sweet picture of her son watching the TV after the game ended and wrote in the caption: ‘Aw – Just wanted to say thank you to the England team for giving us so many exciting memories.

‘I’m so proud of them though. The joy they have brought us with their talent and determination was so uplifting and much needed after all we’ve been through. They’ve definitely inspired me to dream big again.’

Manager Gareth Southgate shouldered the blame for England’s agonising shootout loss to Italy on Sunday after youngsters Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed penalties to leave the nation heartbroken.

He said: ‘That is my responsibility. I chose the guys to take the kicks. I told the players that nobody is on their own in that situation. We win and lose together as a team. They have been tight throughout and that’s how it needs to stay.

‘It is my decision to give (Saka) that penalty. That is totally my responsibility. It is not him or Marcus or Jadon. We worked through them in training. That is the order we came to. Marcus and Jadon have been by far the best in the lead-in. It was a gamble (to bring them on), but if we gamble earlier we maybe lose the game in extra time.’
