Peter Crouch gives his verdict on the Big Six’s plans to break away to new Europe Super League

There were many queries for Peter Crouch when he opened his mailbox this week.

They left Sportsmail’s resident columnist in a feisty mood as he tackled the form of Liverpool’s front three and Manchester City’s Wembley woe, but the only place to start is the Big Six’s plan to break away…

Chelsea and Manchester City are two clubs who could take part in a European Super League

Would you prefer to watch the new Super League or League Two?

Robin Karlsson via Twitter

Let’s start with the breakaway plans first, Robin. It’s a disgrace. For six clubs to want to press ahead with a move like this shows no regard for the history of our competitions and what, in turn, those competitions have helped those clubs achieve.

What are the six clubs doing to others such as Everton, West Ham or Leicester, for instance, who have been trying their hardest to get into the Champions League this season? Why are the six looking to breakaway showing a total disregard to everything they have here?

We have got the Premier League, a competition with more than enough money and exposure. We do not need a European Super League in the way Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan and others do. Why are we looking to dilute everything to follow them? We do not need to be part of it.

I fear, however, that executives just will not care. If Barcelona versus Liverpool is on TV of a Saturday evening, let’s be honest — people are going to tune in to watch it.

Do you think Harry Kane should let supporters know if he is staying before they purchase season tickets?

Mike Smith via email

It’s a good question, Mike. It’s a fair one, too. I understand why supporters are anxious and want clarity before making such a big financial commitment. I don’t blame anyone for wanting as much information as possible as Kane is Tottenham’s icon and leading man.

But, in all honesty, I don’t think he knows what the future holds for him. His immediate concerns will be about being fit for Wembley next week. Beyond that, I don’t believe he has made a decision.

A lot of Spurs fans would understand if he wanted to pursue a new challenge but, equally, he will be thinking about loyalty, the wrench that leaving would bring and his reputation at the club. He is in a similar position to Steven Gerrard when Chelsea wanted him in 2005. He will not rush it.

Which of Liverpool’s front three would you let go this summer?

James Harrison via Twitter

I wouldn’t sell any of them, James. Why would you even think of doing that unless one of them wanted to go? I understand Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have not hit the heights we have expected of them this season but that doesn’t mean their time is up.

It staggers me that we live in a world where cancel culture is growing by the day. A player is out of form for a season? Sell him. A manager underperforms? Sack him. It’s a miserable way to go on and let’s just put what Mo Salah, Mane and Firmino have achieved in context.

They are the front three who brought the title to Liverpool after 30 years and there is plenty of life in them still. I bet you if Mane or Firmino went somewhere else, they would be exhilarating. Jurgen Klopp, for one, will not be in any hurry to let them go.

How much will Pep Guardiola regret his team selection at Wembley?

Luke Forsyth via email

It was interesting to see how Guardiola was so spiky on Saturday night, Luke. He will have been stung by the fact an opportunity to make history had gone but he will have also been stung by questions about the team he picked.

The reason Manchester City have been in a position to challenge for four trophies is thanks to Guardiola’s ability to chop and change. Seven of the team that started at Wembley started the third-round tie against Birmingham, so it wasn’t like this line-up had come from nowhere.

Completing a quadruple is practically mission impossible. Losing to Chelsea will hurt but there is only one trophy Guardiola wants this season and that is the Champions League. I bet he would even be tempted to swap success in the Premier League if you gave him the chance to conquer Europe.

Arsenal have played 25 consecutive seasons in Europe. Do you think they will make it 26 and how bad would it be if they don’t?

Jade Craddock via email

They will not be qualifying for Europe through the Premier League, Jade. I look at them sitting in ninth, with 46 points, and I do not see how any Arsenal fan could say the domestic season has been positive. The 1-1 draw with Fulham summed up everything about the way the year has gone.

The Europa League offers a shot at redemption but would I put money on them to beat Manchester United or Roma in the final? No. They are not as good as United and I don’t even think it is a given they will beat Villarreal in the semi-finals.

It’s Catch-22 as they need to buy players to improve but not being in Europe will mean they can’t attract the ones they want. So, yes, it will be hugely detrimental. When you think about it, 25 years in Europe is staggering. It again shows just how good Arsene Wenger was for Arsenal.

Who is your pick to be the next England Under-21 manager to look after the exciting next generation?

Matt Greenall via email

Frank Lampard or Joe Cole would be at the front of my thoughts, Matt. I know there are young, hungry coaches in the FA system and if they decided to go down that route, good luck to them. I look at Frank and Joe, though, and see people who could be inspirational.

They have been there and done it and both of them are eager to help young players. It would be exciting to see them working at the FA.

Until next time, stay safe and well.
