Politicians have no right to step in and prevent Serie A from restarting, says Lazio chief Igli Tare

‘The government can’t stop football’: Italy’s politicians have no right to step in and prevent Serie A from restarting, says Lazio chief Igli Tare… as he claims players ‘celebrated’ when told they could start training again

  • Italy’s government has allowed football clubs to return to their training grounds
  • It came after the likes of Sassuolo and Roma announced their intentions to do so
  • But there are no guarantees yet the Serie A season will restart and be completed
  • That is despite the fact that all 20 clubs voted that they wish to finish the season
  • But Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has insisted politicians must not interfere

Lazio sporting director Igli Tare has claimed the government cannot prevent football in Italy from resuming and has revealed players ‘celebrated’ the news about training starting up again.

The Italian government gave the green light for football clubs to return to their training grounds on Sunday after a number of Serie A sides announced their intention to come back to training this week.

But despite the expected return to training, there are no guarantees the Serie A season will actually get going again despite all 20 clubs voting that they wish to complete the 2019-20 campaign, as Sportsmail understands there is a 60/40 split as to whether it should continue or be cancelled.

But Tare has warned the country’s politicians they should not step in and stop the league from restarting in any case.

‘I heard that a legal order to block the championship may come this week,’ he told Sky Sport Italia

‘But that’s not their field. FIFA and UEFA have expressed themselves clearly and said that the championships must be concluded. We can also resume in June and conclude between August and September, taking advantage of the fact that the 2022 World Cup will be held during winter.

‘To finish the current season will also serve as an experience to start the next one. Before the resumption we will have to do the antibody tests.

But it is still unclear whether Juventus and the other sides will be able to resume Serie A action

‘Earlier, an order was issued to resume activity on May 6, now it can be done tomorrow. The idea that Lazio are pushing to resume the campaign has been badly conveyed.

‘For us, we must give a strong signal to the system of Italian football.’

However, despite no official announcement regarding the league’s resumption, Tare has insisted that players did celebrate the news of training restarting.

However, the club’s sporting director played down hopes of winning the title, despite Simone Inzaghi’s men trailing leaders Juventus by just a single point in the current standings.

But Tare has warned politicians like Sport Minister Vincenzo Spadafora not to intervene

‘To talk about the Scudetto, with 12 games to go and 36 points still up for grabs, seems a bit much.

‘I hope so, but I don’t think we will be the same team when we restart. The players have kept still, [coach Simone] Inzaghi and I have been answering their questions about when to start for three weeks.

‘Yesterday, when the order came out, everybody celebrated, because we can start again.’
