Popular online clothing marketplace Poshmark closes down – with users furious they were given less than a week’s notice

  • Online marketplace will close at end of October
  • Poshmark Australia, India and UK all to close

A popular online marketplace for new and secondhand clothes has shut down – with customers furious they were given less than a week’s notice.

Poshmark Australia will officially close on October 26, with the marketplace in India and the UK also shutting up shop.

The platform, which has more than 80million users worldwide, allows people to buy and sell products from fashion, electronics and home goods.

The company said the decision to close was ‘to focus our energy and increase our investments’ in core markets in the US and Canada.

‘Our mission has always been to put people at the heart of commerce. From the start, we envisioned a vibrant community that would share their style and create the largest network of shoppable closets across the world,’ CEO Manish Chandra said.

‘And while our ambition to connect as many closets as possible remains the same, I’m sad to share that we’ve made the tough decision to close three of our expansion marketplaces.

‘I know this is especially hard news for those of you across the globe who have come to know and love Poshmark – please know that I’m incredibly grateful for you and for the community that we’ve built together.

‘We hope to be back at some point in the future.’

Aussie users will have until October 25 to use any remaining credits. From October 26, buyers won’t be able to make any new purchases and sellers can’t create any more listings.

Sellers will have until November 1 to redeem their Poshmark earnings, with the marketplace to completely shut down the following day.

Poshmark launched in Australia and India in 2021, and was set up in the UK earlier this year.

The news has angered many customers who had countless items up for sale.

‘Why are we as sellers only finding out via this post and the pop up on Poshmark as someone with over 500 items in my closet. Some better communication would have been appreciated,’ one commented on Poshmark’s announcement post.

‘I think more notice should have been given to sellers to give them an opportunity to sell their inventory as so many put so much work in to it,’ said another.

‘For the amount of work that’s gone into our closets, we deserve more than a week’s notice,’ one wrote.

‘As an Aussie Poshmark seller living in America, this is sad news. This platform allowed me to build a successful business at home around 2 kids,’ one said.
