PSG players REJECT a pay cut as wage negotiations stall

PSG players REJECT a pay cut as talks stall… leaving Neymar still earning £600,000 per week and Kylian Mbappe on £375,000 while football faces another two months before it returns in France

  • Paris Saint-Germain’s players have rejected pay-cut proposals from the club
  • Neymar is the Ligue 1 side’s highest-paid player on £600,000 per week
  • Negotiations between the club and the players have reportedly stalled
  • Football in France is also not expected to return until at least August
  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

Paris Saint-Germain are at loggerheads with their players, who are refusing to take a pay cut.

Talks have been ongoing between the players and the Ligue 1 club over pay cuts in light of coronavirus.

But it has been reported in France that PSG’s players are reluctant to listen to club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Leonardo.

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are the French champions’ highest-paid players, earning £600,000 and £375,000 per week respectively.

Al-Khelaifi revealed last week in an interview that the players would have to do what they could to help the club reduce costs.

He said: ‘I expect them to make an effort for their club.’

According to L’Equipe, Thiago Silva and Marquinhos, captain and vice-captain, are leading talks with the club on behalf of the players.

The club had hoped that its players would be more co-operative and help by making donations or taking voluntary pay cuts.

It comes as the French prime minister, Edouard Philippe, is expected to announce on Tuesday afternoon that football in France won’t be returning until later this summer.

Reports in French newspaper La Parisen have suggested that the current Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons, which were halted in March, may only resume in August and not before.

PSG have estimated that it could lose around £210million with revenue from gate receipts non-existent until football resumes.

That number is likely to increase should the season not restart until much later in the year.
