A police officer has been hospitalised after he was accidentally shot during a training session.

A male sergeant sustained the gunshot wound following an ‘accidental discharge during routine firearm training’ at a Childers police facility about 10am on Thursday.

‘Initial information indicates the officer, an instructor, sustained a single gunshot wound to the calf following an accidental discharge by another officer during a live-fire training session,’ Queensland Police said in a statement.

The officer was rushed to hospital after suffering non-life threatening injuries in the incident

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and is currently in a stable condition.

Queensland Police are providing support to both officers and their colleagues and families.

The North Coast Region will investigate the incident and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland have been advised.

Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll told her fellow officers that a female senior constable accidentally shot the sergeant in the leg.

‘Initial information indicates the sergeant, who was the safety officer at the time, attempted to prevent a fellow officer from tripping as they were moving backwards during a live-fire training session, when the accidental discharge occurred,’ Ms Carroll wrote to officers the Courier Mail reported.

‘A single round was discharged striking the sergeant in the lower leg.

‘I’ve been assured that everything possible is being done by the wonderful health care workers who have been involved in his treatment.’
