Queensland push for digital driver’s licenses – after success in New South Wales and South Australia

Another Australian state moves to roll out digital driver’s licenses – after success in New South Wales and South Australia

  • Queensland has already conducted a successful digital licence pilot program
  • 750 residents, 120 businesses, used licence app in Hervey Bay, Maryborough
  • 94% satisfaction rate among users means digital licenses likely to be rolled out

The wallet could end up as a fashion accessory in Queensland with the state considering a move to digital driver’s licenses.

The proposal could push wallets, which are already under pressure from digital bank and credit cards, further into irrelevance.

Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads has already conducted a successful pilot program to test digital car and boat licenses in place of physical licences.

Some 750 residents and 120 businesses used a licence app in Hervey Bay and Maryborough between March and September 2020.

There was a 94 per cent satisfaction rate among users and digital licenses are now likely to be rolled out across Queensland.

‘An evaluation of the pilot has been completed and will be used in the consideration of a broader rollout,’ the department told AAP in a statement on Friday.

Digital licence apps are already used in NSW and South Australia as well as a number of overseas jurisdictions.

The department said the digital licence app has security and privacy features designed to protect data against cybercrime and theft.

If successful, the rollout could relegate wallets to mere fashion accessories, as tissues did for pocket squares.
