Savvy shopper discovers M&S is cheaper than Tesco

It is often assumed that M&S is more expensive than other supermarkets, due to its quality of produce, but a curious shopper has found it’s actually more accessible than you might imagine.

Kathryn Leech, 26, a digital media manager from Manchester, is a self-proclaimed ‘savvy saver’ and shares her money knowledge online with her 26,300 TikTok followers (@everylittlepenny).

Previously, she has uncovered the price differences in products across top supermarkets and Kathryn has now done further digging to find out where is actually cheaper for the weekly shop.

And her latest research has shown that, surprisingly, M&S items can be cheaper than the trusted Tesco prices, sometimes costing as much as 70p less for everyday items of the same size and weight.

Kathryn Leech, 26, from Manchester, compared prices for several items between Tesco and M&S and was shocked to find it was the latter which had cheaper prices

In her latest viral video, which has racked up 160,000 views and over 8,000 likes, the super saver goes out to pick up food essentials in both Marks and Spencer and Tesco supermarkets.

She starts by showing the difference between a punnet of strawberries, which costs £2.25 in Marks and Spencer, with the same price for the product available in Tesco.

The clip also shows red grapes, which are marked at £2.40 in Marks’, but £2.50 in Tesco, as well as a single cucumber – with a 10p difference showing Marks and Spencer is the cheaper supermarket.

Other items include bread, with a white loaf priced at 70p in M&S, but 90p in Tesco and a block of mild cheddar, which came in at an eye-watering £3.20 in Tesco – 70p dearer than Marks’.

‘So whether it’s price matching Aldi on the basics, locking the price of more than a thousand household staples until 2023, or offering exclusive deals and rewards through thousands of Clubcard Prices – we’re more committed than ever to providing our customers with great value.’

Users have flocked to the comments section to share their reactions, with many shocked at how ‘cheap’ M&S actually is.

One person commented: ‘I did a shop at m&s last week blown away how much food I got 3 bags full for £56!’

Someone else added: ‘The only reason people think M&S is expensive is because they have a solid, desirable brand.’

Another user said: ‘That’s really shocked me! I thought Tesco would defo have been cheaper.’ [sic]

‘Yep! I buy all my essentials at m&s, they’re cheaper and better quality.’ commented another viewer. [sic]

‘LOVE LOVE LOVE M&S,’ said someone else.

‘I expected Tesco to be cheaper because we have a preconceived idea that M&S is quite ‘upmarket’ so I was surprised that actually it’s incredibly affordable, especially as both of these shops are convenience city centre stores.

‘You’d probably gravitate towards Tesco if you needed to pop out for a few things, but actually M&S is great value.’
