Seeking sanctuary! Moment buck breaks into church at the start of hunting season in Michigan

  • Pastor Amanda Eicher and husband Luke thought a burglar was in their church
  • The preachers looked inside the Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Sturgis
  • They saw the impressive 10-point buck rampaging through the building

This is the moment a deer broke into a Michigan church on the first day of the state’s hunting season after smashing through a window.

Amanda Eicher and her husband Luke, who are both pastors, spotted the broken window on the morning of Monday, November 15 and believed their church had been targeted by thieves.

Instead, when the couple entered the Grace Christian Fellowship church in Sturgis they spotted the large buck rampaging through the building.

Pastor Eicher took out her phone and filmed the deer as it ran around the church for several minutes.

The buck even managed to make its way upstairs to a gallery overlooking the church’s congregation and altar.

Pastor Eicher said: ‘When I peeked inside, I saw the window was broken and heard loud banging. My husband rushed in and found this 10-point buck. On the opening day of the gun season of all days!’

A ten-point buck refers to the number of protrusions on its antlers. A deer like this one, with five points on each side of its antlers, is highly prized by hunters.

Viewers who watched the footage online included Yvonne Leonard, who said: ‘He went to get right with Jesus before facing opening day.’

Caleb Bennett claimed the deer was ‘running a little behind’ for Sunday’s service.

Candy Hall joked: ‘It’s just praying for its deer life.’

Afterwards Pastor Eicher commented: ‘I’m still a little shaken up.’

Hunters using guns can get a license to hunt deer with antlers between November 15 and November 30.

According to state regulations, deer shot in Michigan should be tested for Chronic Wasting Disease.

Hunters are asked to decapitate the animal and deliver the head to specialist check stations.
