He said:  ‘The cold just got too much for me. Physically and mentally I was coping well.

‘But in the challenge we did yesterday which was the survival challenge, you cant imagine how cold it is.

‘It’s a cold to the bone. Earlier on in the show I got hypothermia and today when we came out of the survival course it was back again.’

In the episode which aired Monday, after completing a relentless obstacle course earlier in the day, the fitness trainer appeared rattled back at base camp.

‘The water f**ked me. I just couldn’t get going. So far off the pace because of the cold water, I just couldn’t f**king get going,’ he reflected.

DS (directing staff) Billy Billingham then paid the remaining recruits a visit in their dormitory to see how they were all faring after one of the toughest challenges yet.

‘Staff, I’ve decided to VW (voluntarily withdraw),’ Shannan declared, as his fellow recruits listened on in shock.

Shannan assured them that he was ‘serious’ and said he’d given the decision a lot of thought and consideration.

He explained: 'It's the inability to work in the cold again. I just could not get going on that course. I gave it everything I had, I used every trick in my head, and I was that far off the pace'

The other recruits urged him not to do it, as a disbelieving Sabrina Frederick repeatedly told him, ‘No, no.’

‘Listen, it’s the inability to work in the cold again. I just could not get going on that course. I gave it everything I had, I used every trick in my head, and I was that far off the pace,’ he explained.

He then pulled off his armband and once again declared he was ‘done’, before a sympathetic Billy walked him out.
