Sky hikes prices of broadband and TV channels by an extra £43 a year from April in fresh cost of living blow

  • Families will need to fork out an extra estimated £3.60 a month soon 
  • Sky TV and BT Sport packages rise by £1 a month to £27 and £28, respectively  
  • Broadband will go up by £2.50 to  £27.50 for essential and £30.50 for superfast
  • This comes as the cost of living crisis sees inflation up to 30-year high of 5.5%

Sky is hiking prices of broadband and TV channels by an extra £43 a year from April in a fresh cost of living blow. 

Families will need to fork out an additional £3.60 a month, Sky estimates, as it raises the costs across its services. 

This will hit those who enjoy their hit TV shows like Succession, Game of Thrones and Westworld on Sky. 

Sky joins other broadband and TV providers such as Virgin Media, which is already set to hike prices by an average of 4% from March 1, 2022. 

And BT, TalkTalk and Vodafone that are increasing by as much as 9%.

Sky increasing prices for broadband, TV and phone calls

The average family is set to pay £3.60 a month.

Broadband 

  • £2.50 increase – Sky Broadband Essential goes from £25 to £27.50
  • £2.50 increase – Sky Broadband Superfast goes from £28 to £30.50 

TV 

  • £1 increase for sport – BT Sport goes from £27 to £28 
  • £1 increase – Sky Signature goes from £26 to £27
  • £1 increase – Sky HD goes from £7 to £8  

Phone calls 

  • 2p increase – Talk rates go from 20p per minute to 22p per minute  

This comes as the cost of living crisis sees inflation up to 30-year high of 5.5%. 

The ONS said the cost of clothes and footwear pushed inflation higher last month, with the lowest January discounts in shops since 1990. 

Sky TV and BT Sport packages will rise by £1 a month to £27 and £28 in April, respectively. 

Broadband will go up by £2.50 to £27.50 for essential and £30.50 for superfast. 

Its mobile outfit will also be reintroducing roaming charges to Europe from the UK, with a daily cost cap of £2. 

Customers going to Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands will face no extra costs. 

A Sky spokesperson said: ‘We know price increases are never welcome so we aim to keep prices as low as possible while still delivering the content customers love, the flexibility to choose the right package, and our leading customer service.’ 

Under Ofcom rules if broadband, mobile phone or landline contracts increase and you wish to leave your contract then you are allowed to do so free of charge. 

Consumer website Which recommends haggling with Sky to get deals when the new charges come into forces. 

It said that as you can leave your contract without any charges and no penalties, this may be the easiest way to get offers from Sky on prices or getting them to allow you to subscribe to several services.
