The incident came to light after the boy’s family recently took him to seek medical advice at the Shuangjiang County People’s Hospital in south-western China’s Yunnan Province.

For the past year, the youngster, Xiao Tao, had difficulties breathing and suffered a persistent sore throat, reported local media. He received different treatments which all failed to fully cure his condition.

While examining the patient, doctors spotted a live leech in the boy’s windpipe, the tube that connects the mouth and nose to the lungs.

He was then admitted to the facility and scheduled to receive surgery to remove the parasite on October 16.

Footage showing the operation captures the revolting moment a surgeon pulled out the brown worm from the youngster’s throat with a pair of forceps.

The doctors believed that the live leech had gotten inside the boy’s body after he drank contaminated water.

‘[We] think that the child’s breathing problems were caused by the leech,’ the surgeon said while holding the squirming worm, ‘He may have the habit of drinking unclean water.’

The medic warned families, particularly those living in rural areas, to educate their children about the danger of consuming contaminated water.

In July, a Chinese farmer who drank unclean water in the mountains had a live leech removed from his nose after suffering from repeated nosebleeds.

The blood-sucking worm had lived inside the 57-year-old for about two weeks when a medic pulled out the wiggling creature from him with tweezers, a report said.
