Harry’s catchy tune was previously sitting at seventh in the listing, which is published weekly and based off sales, radio play and streaming numbers in the US from the previous week.
Billboard reported Harry’s chart-topping success, saying the song ‘blasted’ to the number one spot this week and received an impressive 14.2m US streams.
It is thought that #WatermelonSugarDay trending on Twitter on July 31 and August 3 helped the star’s song climb the charts.
Meanwhile Taylor’s Cardigan fell to number eight after its debut last week in the top spot. However the songstress have a veryimpressive first week, breaking Billboard records.
Past: Taylor and Harry were linked from 2012 to 2013, with it being thought that he inspired some of her songs on album 1989 (pictured in December 2012)
Taylor became the only artist to ever debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 album charts at the same time when her single Cardigan hit number one at the beginning of August.
Taylor and Harry were linked from 2012 to 2013. He is largely believed to be the inspiration for her tracks Style and Out Of The Woods, both off of the album 1989.
Queen of the charts: Taylor Swift made music history last week by having her album Folklore and its lead track Cardigan both debut at number one
And in March Harry, who was recently said to have reportedly added £50 million to his fortune since leaving One Direction, only had nice things to say about his ex while speaking to Howard Stern.
While many of Swift’s exes have spoken out about her using her romantic life for songwriting fodder, Harry said he was totally flattered by inspiring his former girlfriend’s ‘great’ songwriting.
Asked how he felt about exes writing songs about him, he told Howard: ‘I think about what it means to me to write a song about somebody else and for somebody else to do that, it’s like flattering.’
At it alone: Harry has had a successful career on the solo circuit, since releasing his debut single Sign Of The Times in 2017 (pictured in the video to Watermelon Sugar)
He went on, telling the shock jock: ‘Even if the song isn’t that flattering, you still spent time on it and ultimately, using Taylor as an example, she’s a great songwriter. So at least they’re good songs.’
Harry continued: ‘The only time you really think, “is this song too personal?” Is if you think about, “is this going to be really annoying for the other person?” Because I do [care].’
Harry last publicly dated Camille Rowe, who was said to be the inspiration for many of the songs off his latest album Fine Line. While Taylor is dating British actor Joe Alwyn.
Success: Billboard announced Harry’s number one saying that Watermelon Sugar had ‘blasted’ to the number one spot with an impressive 14.2m US streams (pictured in February)
