  • A teenager purchased a dress that was far less flattering in real life than online
  • Alyssa, from Auckland, purchased the custom-fit ballgown for more than $200
  • But the 17-year-old said when she tried on her ‘dream’ dress, she was left in tears
  • She claimed the design, colour and sizing was different to what she’d ordered

A teenage girl has been left in tears after a dress she bought for her school ball was far less flattering in real life than online.

Alyssa, from Auckland in New Zealand, purchased the custom-fit formal gown for $212.80, including  postage, from a clothing website.

But the 17-year-old girl said when she received her ‘dream’ dress, she noticed the colour, design and measurement was completely different to what she’d ordered.

Alyssa, from Auckland, said she was left in tears after the dress she tried on wasn't quite the glamorous gown she thought she was buying

Expectation verses reality: Alyssa, from Auckland, said she was left in tears after the dress she tried on wasn’t quite the glamorous gown she thought she was buying

‘When the package arrived, I ripped it open and it was inside out but straight away I could see that the colour wasn’t right. When I turned it the right way, there are no words, I was so disappointed. The colour was completely wrong,’ she told Stuff NZ.

‘When I put it on it was completely massive, it didn’t fit at all.’

Alyssa – whose school ball is on Friday, July 5 – claimed after she contacted the company about the ill-fitting garment, they only offered her a 10 per cent refund.

Before making the purchase, Alyssa said she only decided to go ahead with the order after spending time researching the company and reading ‘four out of five star’ reviews from customers.

But the maxi dress she tried on wasn’t quite the glamorous gown she thought she was buying.

By sharing her story, she wanted to warn other shoppers about buying online.

‘I would tell others to be very careful. I wouldn’t want people to go through what I have been through. There has been so much stress as I have tried to find something that made me as excited as I was when I ordered that dress,’ she said.
