Autumn is the best time for long hiking tours. In southern countries, it is no longer so hot and in the northern colors the foliage. The Ferienhausportal Casamundo.de has gathered together with HomeToGo.de the best regions for the hiking holiday. Included are the average cost of an overnight stay and the best weather conditions.
Portugal
At the top of the podium lands Portugal, where in October with an average of 92 euros cost of accommodation must be expected. On average, there are only four rainy days, but seven hours of sunshine per day, and with about 19 degrees, it is pleasantly mild.
Great trails are the Rota Vicentina on the Alentejo coast (total length: about 400 kilometers, individual stages around 25 kilometers) and the Caminho Histórico (it is part of the Rota Vicentina, 230 kilometers long and connects Santiago do Cacém and Cape Cabo de Sao Vicente).
Sardinia (Italy)
With an average of 83 euros per night , Sardinia is also quite cheap in October. And the weather also plays along: there are about six rainy days and an average of six hours of sunshine per day, and with 20 degrees it is also very pleasant.
There are many beautiful hiking trails on the island. Some examples: The tour to Cala Goloritze , one of the most beautiful bays in Sardinia (it takes about one and a half hours, it goes through old cork and holm oak forests and through scree fields).
You should already have some experience for the hike to the Gola di Su Gorropu , one of the deepest gorges in Europe (the trail is signposted from the street guardhouse Cantoniera Genna Silana on the SS 125 panoramic road.
Is also very attractive the F lussbettwanderung Riu Calaresu in the east of the island. It goes through the gorge Gola di Pirincanese (4.8 kilometers).
Madeira
The Portuguese island of Madeira is a great destination for all seasons. In October, the accommodations are cheap (around 75 euros per night) . You have to expect seven rainy days per month, but on average you also have six hours of sunshine per day. The temperatures are about 15 degrees – so you should take a jacket.
Some of the most beautiful hiking trails: the Levada dos Prazeres (Eucalyptus-Levada) to Calheta and from there by taxi back to Prazeres.
Spectacular is the four and a half hour long circular walk to Caldeirão Verde , the green cauldron (start at Santana), through wild gorges and jungles, also a 50 meter long tunnel must be crossed (do not forget flashlight!)
Through a laurel forest and a tunnel leads the levada of the 25 springs . The popular hiking trail is 8.3 kilometers long (walking time about four hours).
Great foresight can be enjoyed at Pico do Arieiro . From the summit, reachable by car, you can hike to Pico Ruivo (about 2.5 hours walking time).
La Palma
The Canary Island is a popular destination for hikers. In summer, it is too hot for some tours, but in autumn, the temperatures are 23 degrees early in the morning. Accommodation costs around 68 euros per night , there are six rainy days and four hours of sunshine.
Beautiful hiking trails: From San Andrés y Sauces, it takes about three and a half hours to get to the Mirador Somada viewpoint . For the track you need a bit of fitness.
For the highest volcanic peak, the Pico Nambroque , leads a beautiful tour from El Pilar, but it is 16 kilometers long.
Just over eight kilometers long is the circular walk from Fuente Grande to the springs of Las Brenas at the foot of Cumbre Nueva.
Very attractive are also the trails in the National Park Caldera de Taburiente . From many you have a wonderful view over the volcano crater.
Crete
Spring temperatures (20 degrees), only six rainy days and six hours of sunshine per day make the Greek island an ideal destination for the fall, although accommodations with an average of 104 euros per night are not really cheap. But now the trails are not so crowded.
A few route tips: The five-kilometer trail from Mochos to Malia – he is the former connection between the two places and offers in some places a great view of the sea.
Matala is one of the most famous beaches in Crete – hippies lived in caves here in the 1970s. A beautiful hiking trail leads from Matala to Vathy beach . It is eleven kilometers long and leads directly along the coast. It is a demanding way, with which one also has to climb a bit.
Going high, the three-kilometer hike leads to the 2453-meter-high Pachnes peak . From Anopolis it starts, after about one and a half hours you are up. It goes to the plateau Russies, where in autumn an endemic Herbstzeitlosenart blooms.
The hike up Psiloritis , which at 2546 meters is the highest mountain of the island, is also very attractive . The view from the top is great (distance: about nine kilometers).
Hiking trails in Germany
If you do not want to travel so far, you will also find wonderful hiking trails in Germany.
Harzer Hexenstieg : It connects Thale with Osterode and runs longitudinally over the low mountain ranges. Through the breathtaking Bodetal valley and on the summit of the Brocken, through deep forests and over plateaus. The path marked with a witch, which also has a variant without the Brocken summit, is 97 kilometers long.
Malerweg in Saxon Switzerland : Autumn is high season for hikers in this region. So it can get busy on weekends. The landscape with its bizarrely shaped sandstone cliffs and moss-covered slopes is fairy-tale, the stretches however sometimes very demanding. The Malerweg, the main hiking trail in the region, is famous. It is 112 kilometers long and passes practically all natural attractions.
Schluchtensteig in the Black Forest : Along steep cliffs and several waterfalls, this 119-kilometer trail leads past famous sites such as the Wutachschlucht. It is a demanding hiking route, because there are many ascents and descents.
Altmühltal-Panoramaweg : It always runs along the Altmühl, a total of 200 kilometers long, and it connects Gunzenhauen and Kelheim. Highlights include the Limes Grenzwall and places like Beilngries, Neumarkt an der Donau and Kelheim.
