The Crown’s Emma Corrin admits she wants to ‘move away’ from ‘posh English’ roles after being praised for Princess Diana performance

The Crown star Emma Corrin has insisted she wants to ‘move away’ from ‘posh English’ roles after her acclaimed performance as Princess Diana.

The actress, 25, who has been praised for her performance as the late Royal, said she’d love to star in a gritty drama with an ‘outrageous accent.’

Emma was praised by fans and critics last year when she starred as Diana in The Crown’s fourth series, depicting the Princess’ difficult integration into the Royal Family and her turbulent marriage to Prince Charles.

Something different: The Crown star Emma Corrin has insisted she wants to ‘move away’ from ‘posh English’ roles after her acclaimed performance as Princess Diana

Speaking in an interview with The Guardian, Emma said: ‘The industry loves to pigeonhole. The sooner I can move away from doing posh English, the better, even though that’s what I am.

When asked what kind of role she’d like to play next, the star said: ‘I want to do a gritty, independent film, maybe in Scotland or something.

‘I’ll have an outrageous accent, and flowing red hair.’

Last year Emma became an overnight sensation when she took on the role of a young Princess Diana in The Crown.

Series Four depicted The Royal Family throughout the 1980s, and showed Charles and Diana’s romance and eventual marriage.

Emma was praised for her performance as a fish-out-of-water in the Royal household, and earned particular praise for depicting the Princess’ struggle with bulimia.

It comes after she revealed her brother told her she was a perfect fit for the role of Princess Diana two years before she was cast in the Netflix hit.

She reflected on her sibling’s intuition during an interview with Variety in their iHeart podcast The Big Ticket on Wednesday.

Explaining how her brother shared his support for her taking the part in 2017, she said: ‘I remember being on holiday with my family maybe when the second season of The Crown had come out and I remember them joking about who was going to play Princess Diana.

‘One of my brothers was like, “You should play Princess Diana.” I was at university at that time and I was like, “In my wildest dreams.”

‘It’s very strange to think back on those kind of moments now,’ she admitted

Emmy-winning casting director Robert Sterne revealed recently to Elle that the tense lunch between Princess Diana and Emerald Fennell’s Camilla was used as an audition scene for the latter role, with Emma only serving as a stand-in reader as Diana.

Sterne explained: ‘I usually read in all these meetings, but we decided because it was this major scene that we would get somebody to come in [for Diana]. We asked Emma to come in, not thinking about casting Diana at this point.

‘But as she was reading with these Camillas, all the directors and the showrunner were looking more at her and not at the people playing Camilla—who will remain nameless, of course.

‘When we got to thinking about Diana a year later, there she was in my notes.’
