The Project star announces pregnancy live on air: ‘I can no longer hold it in as the wardrobe department is sick of trying to hide it’

Rachel Corbett has announced she is pregnant with her first child. 

The journalist, 41, shared the exciting news during Wednesday’s broadcast of The Project, leaving her co-hosts Waleed Aly, Carrie Bickmore and Peter Helliar thrilled.

‘I can no longer hold it in as the wardrobe department is sick of trying to hide it,’ Rachel began.

‘I’m pregnant,’ she continued, throwing her hands up in the air. 

The panel then launched confetti into the air as they offered their congratulations to the long-serving star.

‘I’m doing it solo, which is great for me, but you find when you tell people it’s hilarious because they think it’s a choice of last resort,’ she said.  

Carrie appeared surprised by the admission.

Rachel continued: ‘Then you have to spend the next 30 minutes explaining you’re not crying yourself to sleep at night. But for me it’s the perfect decision.’ 

‘It feels like exactly the right thing to do and I’m really excited.’

Rachel finished by saying she is having a girl.

A number of fans were only too happy to express their love for Rachel. 

‘This is fricken huuuuuge!!!!’ one fan wrote, while another added: ‘Welcome to the solo mum community. All the best with your pregnancy. 

‘Congratulations Rachel. Thrilled for you. You will be an amazing mum,’ wrote another.

Rachel rarely reveals news about herself but did say she lost her mother after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. 

Speaking on the show in 2020, Rachel was forthright about the emotional loss. 

‘Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease around 2005-2006. She kept it from us because honestly I think there was a part of her that was ashamed or embarrassed,’ she said.

‘Towards the end of the disease, it got really scary. She became a very different person to who I knew but she was absolutely still so present.

‘You could see this person who was struggling and lost and afraid and trapped in her own mind.’  

Becoming tearful, she went on: ‘I remember reading that it was around 10 years that people live with the disease.

‘It was pretty much around that time that mum passed away. I just feel like a really wonderful, vivacious, positive, brilliant woman was taken too soon.’
