Stranger Things is currently number three on the list, followed by Netflix’s new documentary series Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99.

Many of the streaming channel’s viewers binge-watched The Sandman over the weekend after waiting more than two decades for the story to be shared onscreen.

Gaiman’s comic book series was first published from 1989-1996, but previous attempts to bring his beloved story to film were held up for years until Netflix signed a deal to produce the show in 2019.

The Sandman’s first season has received generally positive reviews from critics, with a Time review calling it ‘one of the best small-screen comic adaptations ever made.’

The series currently has a score of 87% with critics and 86% with fans on Rotten Tomatoes, though some have found fault with its pacing.

A review published by USA Today echoed those complaints, stating that the show was ‘excruciatingly slow and dull if not outright boring.’

Many fans have taken to Twitter over the weekend to share just how much they loved the remarkably faithful adaptation, which also stars Jenna Coleman, Patton Oswalt, and Vivienne Acheampong.

‘The Sandman adaptation on Netflix is literally everything I was hoping it would be,’ one person tweeted. ‘Almost completely faithful to the source material without changing much to adapt it into television. People who didn’t read the comics might find it a bit slow in the beginning though. 10/10 for me.’

‘#TheSandman on Netflix is a masterpiece,’ someone else gushed. ‘I know you guys all know that but I’ll use any opportunity to say it and I’m saying it again now the sandman on Netflix is a masterpiece.’

Another added: ‘Even though I finished it two days ago I can’t stop thinking about #TheSandman. It really has to be the BEST screen adaptation of a comic series I have ever seen. Can’t wait for season 2.’

However, there were some viewers who didn’t get what all the hype was about and slammed the series.

‘Neil Gaiman really let OG The Sandman fans down with this new adaption on Netflix. It’s terrible,’ one critic insisted.

‘It pains me to say this but the pacing in the sandman is kinda awful,’ someone else noted, while another added: ‘I need to have a discussion for the people that casted this Sandman. My goodness. It is horrible.’

Gaiman took to Twitter on Friday to share his appreciation for fans who have been raving about the new show.

‘Apparently #TheSandman is trending and so is #Sandman and I’m just so relieved and happy that so many of you like it so much,’ he wrote. ‘(And I’m amazed that so many of you are already up to The Doll’s House.)’

Netflix has yet to announce whether the show will come back for a second season.
