Jack Taylor has been a driving force for League One leaders Peterborough this season

JACK TAYLOR

AGE: 22

CLUB: Peterborough

POSITION:  Midfield

VALUE: £750,000 (2020-21)

WHAT HAS HE GOT?

Taylor is a 6ft 1in box-to-box Irishman coping comfortably in the League One leaders’ midfield. I saw him during an injury-interrupted spell a couple of seasons ago at Barnet. Now he is getting to compete at League level free of those problems and should seize the opportunity.

In a recent game I saw, he had an innocuous first half and was unable to get on the ball as it was whisked from one end of the field to the other. But a change of formation in the second period gave him the chance to show his ability.

Prepared to tackle and challenge, he helped his team gain midfield ascendancy. He is certainly a good competitor.

He passed the ball simply, never trying to over-impress with a difficult delivery.

I wondered if he could be more expansive in his passing, but in this fast-paced game, it was probably more important just to keep possession for his team.

He is a right-footed player with a nice build and he showed confidence on the ball.

He is not a dribbler or fancy-Dan with showy touches — more of a prompter. I liked the way he shuffled across when the opposition had the ball and his head was on the swivel to be aware of players running in behind. He is a brave team player.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

It would be handy if he got on the scoresheet more.

He has hit the net four times in the league this season, most recently a good strike in a win at Plymouth.

He should score more and I shall wait to see if he can get into more advanced positions.

But his all-round game is strong and he is vital to his team. I think he can play in the Championship.
