The top aesthetic trends of 2020 – including Kate Middleton’s ‘happy face’

The top aesthetic trends of 2020 have been revealed, and the tide is turning towards a more natural appearance to kick off the new decade.

Professor Syed Haq, who works in Harley Street, and has been a pioneer in the cosmetics industry for over 20 years, has noted a decrease in the requests for unnatural looking lip fillers and dramatic breast implants, in favour for more subtle ‘tweakments’.

Instead, patients are requesting the ‘Happy Face’, inspired by Kate Middleton, smoothing out their frown lines and injecting filler into the corner of their lips to lift ‘downturned’ smiles.

Elsewhere ‘ear-reshaping’, the anti-aging knee lift and even the ‘Instagram face – where your features are subtly reshaped using filler and Botox – are all expected to explode next year.

Happy Face – Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Cambridge is known for looking exceptionally cheery at all times, and Professor Syed Haq of Harley Street has seen an increase of people requesting the ‘Happy Face’, which smooths frown lines and lifts down-turned smiles by injecting filler into the corners of the lips

Professor Haq revealed: ‘The Duchess of Cambridge has a beautiful face but what makes her even more adored by the public is her friendly, happy and engaging expression which gives everyone added reassurance and confidence.

‘People with a naturally down turned smile, furrowed brow look forever under pressure and anxious.’

Dr Ellie Sateei, head VIVACY trainers, explained: ‘The happy face with an upturned smile can be achieved in a matter of moments using a dermal filler to the corners of the lips or by administering botulinum toxin to specific muscles of the face.’

Professor Haq added: ‘This happier appearance can be further enhanced through another growing trend which involves rounding of the front of the forehead using a fine dermal filler.

‘This has the added advantage of providing a more youthful and feminine appearance to women. The procedure requires an experienced practitioner to carry out a comprehensive assessment and understand the anatomy of the forehead to transform a patient’s profile.’

Spanish Bum Lift – Rihanna

The Brazilian Bum Lift, which sees fat being taken out of key areas such as the waist and injected into the buttock and hip area, will be replaced with a less invasive option - the Spanish Bum Lift which gives a pert bottom like Rihanna's (picturd) using electrical transfers

Professor Haq said: ‘Forget the ‘Brazilian Bum Lift’, there’s a new trending treatment from Spain that is fast becoming the must-have procedure amongst celebrity clients on Harley Street called ‘Indiba Deep Care’.

‘Once a celebrity secret, Indiba’s non-surgical bum lift uses pro-ionic technology and electrical transfers which lift and sculpt with no pain, downtime or invasion.

‘More and more people are opting for non-invasive procedures to get a ‘bum like Rihanna’ – especially when they can give outstanding results without a needle or knife.’

Doe-Eyed Laser – Angelina Jolie

Professor Haq said: ‘People have been having eyelid surgery for a long time, one thing I’ve noticed on the scene is people using lasers to tighten the area and work on skin resurfacing.

‘Blepharoplasty by Aerolase involves the removal of lax skin and fat deposits from the eyelids to achieve the doe-eyed look like celebrity Angelina Jolie.’

Ear Re-Shaping – Cara Delevingne

‘Everyone is on the search for perfection and that even applies to their ears,’ Professor Haq revealed.

‘Octoplasty is not only for children wanting to pin back their ears, now many women are opting for the procedure to achieve ears similar to Cara Delavigne’s – small and symmetrical.

‘Ear reshaping doesn’t end there, and softening the creases in the earlobe (the lobe lift) using a viscoelastic dermal filler can give an added anti-ageing benefit and give added confidence when wearing one’s hair up.’

Hairline Filler – Gigi Hadid

Professor Haq explained: ‘There’s a huge increase in the demand for Scalp Micropigmentation with a particular growth in the female market because of celebrities like Gigi Hadid who often wears her hair in a pony tail, an unachievable style with a gappy hairline.

‘People are tired of trying hair supplements that don’t work and want to restore the look of full hair.

‘One particular emerging trend is ‘Hair Line Filler’ where perfectly matched colour is subtly added to the parting to disguise hair thinning – common post-baby, during menopause, stress and anxiety. I’ve seen some amazing work by the team at Scalp Provoco on Harley Street.’

‘Instagram Face’ – Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

‘The demand for an ‘Instagram Face’ is rapidly increasing,’ Professor Haq revealed.

‘This is where clients want their full face contoured with filler to match the filters on Instagram and the celebrities they follow.

‘This includes filling their jawline, cheeks, nose, chin and lips. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a name that often comes up when discussing defining the jawline and increasing the volume of the lips to look naturally plump.

‘Having grown up in the public eye, you can see Rosie has naturally strong, defining features.

‘The Instagram face is now increasingly a reality, by using ‘patient profiling’ treatments with dermal fillers which focus on jawline, jaw angle, chin, nose, mid cheek, lip and forehead augmentation and projection.’

He added: ‘The South Korean cosmetic industry is leagues ahead in this trend. The treatment is complex and must be carried out by highly experience practitioner.’

Full Body Liposuction – Amber Rose

‘Liposuction is a very effective treatment depending on the patient and their needs for fat reduction,’ Professor Haq said.

‘There is an issue though, of having liposuction post pregnancy as many women will have weight fluctuation and hormonal imbalance over differing periods of time, some prolonged.

‘Once one’s weight is stable and sufficient time has elapsed, then liposuction is an option that would be both effective but moreover safer to perform.

‘Prematurely adopting this type of treatment would not be advised. Since Amber Rose had post-baby liposuction, there has been an increase in the want for the procedure.’

Anti-Ageing Knee Lift – Jennifer Lopez

Professor Haq revealed he regularly has requests for ‘legs like Lopez’, and developed a thread-based treatment to meet the demand.

He explained: ‘This treatment is now being increasingly used by the LA set to rejuvenate their knees.

‘The surface of the skin in such areas can benefit also from the use of skin boosters and viscoelastic hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers.’

Gender Reassignment Surgery – Caitlyn Jenner

Professor Haq said: ‘Once a taboo subject, gender reassignment surgery is on the rise and I believe Caitlyn Jenner has been hugely influential for this.

‘It is a procedure where a transgender person’s physical appearance is altered to resemble the characteristics that are socially associated with their identified gender.

‘With society being more and more accepting of the choices of transgender people, I believe these surgical procedures will increase indefinitely.’

Red Liquid Lift– Ferne McCann

‘Lots of people have heard of the Vampire Facelift but it’s still increasing in popularity and now dubbed the Red Liquid Lift,’ Professor Haq said.

‘Victoria Secret model Shanina Sahik recently tried it in Australia, Ferne McCann has had it and of course no one forgets when Kim Kardashian took to her social media to share her results.

‘The use of the Red Liquid Lift is being increasingly used as a synergistic approach to rejuvenating the face, neck and décolletage areas and works by injecting dermal fillers into the skin to plump up the skin, a non invasive procedure.’

What surgeries are going out of fashion?

He said: ‘There are several procedures that are certainly going out of fashion these days. The idea of over volumising lips is a prime example.

‘The long-term consequences of this type of treatment, often seen in younger women is now being realised.

‘Despite the warnings, this type of treatment has both immediate and long-term negative connotations from an increased risk of vascular compromise to scarring of the lips.’

He continued: ‘Breast enhancement is another area which has seen a significant fashion reversal.

‘As women become more in tune with their bodies and less influenced by fashion trend setters of the past, this type of movement towards natural athletic sustainable enhancement will continue, which frankly speaking can only be better and safer for patients who are looking for a more balanced outcome from their treatments.’
