A British woman who has been living in Australia for two months has revealed the one very common expression that ‘everyone’ uses which baffles her.

TikTok user Louise Collett, who regularly shares clips of her travels in South Australia, said in a recent video she never knows how to respond when some Australians greet her.

‘When an Australian says “Hi, how ya going?” and you don’t know whether to just say hi or to actually answer the question… That isn’t even a saying in the UK but everyone says it here, please help,’ she said.

Some commenters said they also found the expression tricky.

‘I was born in Australia and I still don’t know whether to answer the question or say it back or what to do,’ one person said.

Other amused TikTokers said there were a couple of foolproof replies.

‘Just say “Yeah not bad, yourself”,’ one person said.

‘Or “good and you?”‘ another added.

But many commenters pointed out there was an equally common and confusing British expression.

‘My UK friend used to always say “You alright?” as a greeting and then I would get worried I didn’t look okay,’ one person said.

‘Oh that’s my go-to greeting,’ Ms Collet replied.
