In a worrying development ahead of the Games in July, the nationwide daily tally of cases surpassed 4,000 for the first time since January, including 591 new infections in Tokyo.

Shigeru Omi, the head of the Japanese government’s coronavirus panel, admitted: ‘I can say that a fourth wave of infections has started in the country. Now is the time to flexibly take quasi-emergency measures.’

A poll this week showed more than 70 per cent of Japanese citizens want the Games to be cancelled or postponed. But Tokyo 2020 organisers are pressing ahead with plans and celebrated Wednesday’s 100-day countdown by unveiling the Olympic rings on Mount Takao.

‘Over the next 100 days, Tokyo 2020 will continue fine-tuning its plans,’ said Tokyo 2020 president Seiko Hashimoto. ‘All decisions will be made with the ultimate goal of ensuring a safe environment where athletes can give their very best.

John Coates, the International Olympic Committee coordination commission chair, added: ‘I’m very confident that public opinion will turn. Tireless work is being undertaken behind the scenes to ensure that these will be safe and secure Games for all the participants and the people of Japan.

‘In 100 days, the world will unite once again in sporting celebration. We can’t wait for this truly historic occasion.’
