Team GB seal a bronze medal in the men’s eight at the Tokyo Olympics as they miss out on silver by just 0.13 seconds in a breathtaking battle as New Zealand hold off Germany to claim gold

Team GB added to their medal haul in the men’s eight as they collected bronze following an exciting race that saw them miss out on silver by just 0.13 seconds.

New Zealand emerged victorious to cap off a breathless contest, finishing with a time of 5:24:64, having held off Germany – who posted 5:25:60.

World record holders Germany, who won gold at the  the London 2012 games, shot ahead in the early stages, with Britain in second after the first 500m.

New Zealand began their surge as they edged up to third, as Britain maintained the pressure on Germany by reducing the gap to just two metres.

It made for an exhilarating finale as the three teams battled for supremacy, but it was the Kiwis who pushed forwards at 1000m, powering into the lead as Britain weren’t able to keep their pace as Germany pipped them to silver.
