Recently retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady cast some doubt on the idea of another QB in the league surpassing – or replicating – his dominance in the league.
From when he first stepped on the field in 2001 to when he left the game in 2022, Brady was consistently one of the league’s best passers.
On the latest episode of his ‘Let’s Go!’ podcast, guest Shaquille O’Neal asked the seven-time Super Bowl champion and three-time MVP if there was anyone in the league currently who could come close to replicating his success.
‘Good question. I mean, I think when I’m looking at guys in pro football, Patrick [Mahomes is] the one that really stands out,’ Brady said.
‘They’ve done a great job since he’s really taken over. And he’s got a really great coach – like I was fortunate, like you were fortunate – that helps you and… gives you the humble pie when things are going good and knows how to pick you up when things aren’t good.

Brady: ‘I know what it took and it took a lot… There’s a lot of things that need to go your way.’
‘But it’s gonna be interesting. People have to do it for a long time, I did it for a long time. When I look at my career, I was able to do it every single year for basically every single game.
‘I missed [games] twice – once when I got suspended for four games and once when I tore my ACL on a hit.
‘Other than that, I showed up every week. Not every game [was] perfect, but every game was pretty good. And most of the times I never put my team in a position to lose.
‘There’s very few guys like that I’m watching over and over and over. And I think unfortunately the way the games going, guys are running the ball a lot more, it just makes for a shorter career.
‘They’ve loosened the rules a little bit… some of the rules regarding to hitting the quarterback. so its allowed quarterbacks to run more but running quarterbacks don’t last that long.
‘So I don’t know who can play 21 years – I really don’t. I know what it took and it took a lot and I’m sure some people have ambitions to try. But there’s a lot of things that need to go your way.
“And the only reason why I was able to do it was ’cause I had so many people there to support me – physically, mentally, emotionally – from day one that I got drafted all the way through my last day as a Buc. I had people there that were in my corner, the best group of people to support me and I wanted to show up and do my part to give back to them too.
‘I got asked that question the other day… I believe if someone makes it as long as I’ve made it with the degree of success, then I give them a lot of respect ’cause it would be an unbelievable accomplishment for them to do that in this day and age.’
