Hanks’ newest movie News of The World was released in theatres in the U.S. on Christmas Day.

However, in overseas markets, it dropped on Netflix last week and quickly became the most watched on the subscription streaming platform.

The film marks the star’s first Western and in it, he plays Captain Jefferson Kidd, a veteran and a travelling newsreader in 1870 post-Civil War Texas.

In his travels, he comes across a young girl who was kidnapped some years earlier by Native Americans and pledges to return her to her German immigrant family.

Widely tipped for awards glory, director Paul Greengrass has described Hanks’ performance as ‘one of his very best.’

As for the Golden Globes snub, ‘I think people almost take him for granted at this point because he is always so consistently good,’ Greengrass told news.com.au on Monday.

Hanks, meanwhile, shows no signs of slowing up when it comes to taking on new projects.

He plays Colonel Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s still in production untitled Elvis Presley project.

He has also signed on to play Gepetto in the upcoming Robert Zemeckis live-action adaptation of Pinocchio and is attached to star in a remake of the Swedish film A Man Called Ove.
