Tottenham ‘agree deal worth £43m plus £4m in bonuses with Atalanta for Cristian Romero’ as Spurs finally close in on Argentine defender after selling Toby Alderweireld

  • Reports in Argentina suggest Tottenham have finally agreed a fee with Atalanta
  • The 23-year-old is considered one of the most promising defenders in Europe
  • New boss Nuno Espirito Santo is keen to strengthen after selling Alderweireld

Tottenham have reportedly agreed a £43million fee for Atalanta defender Cristian Romero.

Reports from Argentina have stated that Spurs are closing in on the centre back, with £4m in bonuses apparently agreed on top of the flat initial fee.

And according to Football Italia, with the two sides ‘in total agreement’ and the asking price nearly fulfilled, Romero could be set to join the Premier League side, depending on personal terms being agreed.

However, those are not expected to cause any serious or lengthy delays to the potential deal, with a five-year contract being mooted.

The 23-year-old played for the Argentina side which won the South American competition Copa America, meaning he is yet to return to pre-season training with the Serie A side.

Cash-strapped Barcelona were also understood to be interested, but given the parlous state of the club’s finances, they would prefer a loan with option to buy and could not match the North London side’s initial up-front offer.

New Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito is keen to add to his defensive ranks after experienced centre half Toby Alderweireld moved to Qatar side Al-Duhail.

Atalanta signed Romero from Juventus on a two-year loan with an option to buy, which they can activate before selling on immediately to Nuno’s side.

The Italian outfit have signed Matteo Lovato, 21, from Hellas Verona as a potential successor if Romero leaves.
