Tottenham are reportedly set to open talks over a dramatic return for Mauricio Pochettino as early as next week, with the former boss also set to ask star striker Harry Kane to stay for one more year if he does go back to the club.

Pochettino had a largely successful spell in North London from 2014 to 2019 but was sacked in November with the side 14th in the Premier League, after mediocre form following the limp 2-0 Champions League final loss against Liverpool in May.

The Paris Saint-Germain manager has been heavily linked with a move back to Spurs, and according to the Sun, the club want to begin official negotiations on Monday.

Pochettino, 49, was appointed at PSG in January in his first role since leaving Tottenham, and has had mixed success in the French capital.

He led PSG to French Super Cup and French Cup victories, but they missed out on the Ligue 1 title for just the second time in the last nine years, and were knocked out of the Champions League by Manchester City after a 4-1 aggregate semi-final loss.

The Argentine is said to be disappointed with how the French side is run and has clashed with sporting director Leonardo, meaning he could be open to a return to English football.

If he is reinstated, he will ask Kane to give him another campaign at the club rather than force a move elsewhere.

The England skipper pipped Liverpool’s Mo Salah to the Premier League Golden Boot, scoring 23 goals to Salah’s 22, and is a genuine world-class forward.

He has openly discussed his desire to leave and win major trophies, with those currently unlikely at Spurs, although chairman Daniel Levy hopes the prospect of Pochettino’s return might encourage Kane to stay.

However, it is understood that keeping the 27-year-old is not a deal-breaker for the former 20-cap Argentine international.

Tottenham, who finished seventh in the Premier League and therefore qualified for the new Europa Conference League, are thought to have prepared several options if Kane does go.

Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, and Southampton’s Danny Ings – who scored 14, and 12 league goals – are viewed as viable potential replacements, but those clubs would almost certainly demand more than the £28m, and £20m initially paid for them.
