Up to an inch of heavy rain will batter Britain as a cold front drops temperatures to the single digits this week.

Strong Arctic winds are pushing a heavy band of rain towards the south east of England, the Met Office has warned. Some areas can expect to receive up to 20mm of rain by tomorrow, prompting the Environment Agency to issue flood alerts.

The cold front will push temperatures to as low as -1C tonight, with meteorologists predicting the rest of the week will yield chilly, single digit temperatures.

The wintry weather could bring snow to the Scottish Highlands and other northern regions today. There could be even more snow in Scotland and parts of England throughout the week.

Much of the UK will be cloudy today as heavy rain falls across the country. Some areas may be hit with a wintry mix as cold air pushes to the north. 

Four flood alerts have been issued for communities in the UK that are at risk of possible flooding, including: 

  • River Whitewater and River Hart 
  • Tidal River Avon at Bristol, Pill and Shirehampton  
  • Tidal Thames riverside from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir 
  • Tyne and Wear coast 

Residents in these areas should monitor local water levels and weather conditions and avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding.

There will be mostly light winds tonight, but it will be breezy for North Sea coastal areas and across coastal areas of Scotland with strong winds

Tomorrow, early clouds will break during the day to reveal spells of sunshine, variable amounts of patchy cloud cover and a threat of showers which will merge into longer spells of rain in the south.

Most areas will see gentle northerly winds, however it will be breezy for North Sea coastal areas with brisk winds.

It will be dry and cold for most throughout the end of week, but the far northeast may see a few wintry showers. 

Tuesday will be dry and bright with long sunny spells, however clouds will tend to build during the day and the odd isolated shower cannot be ruled out.

Wednesday will be dry but dull for most as there will be large areas of cloud cover around and there is a chance of a few light showers developing.
