Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has congratulated Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews on his election victory with a gushing statement – and a selfie of them having a BBQ.

Mr Albanese shared a grinning photo of the pair to his Instagram page on Saturday night after the major TV networks called a Labor victory, shortly after 8pm.

‘What a great win,’ Mr Albanese said.

Moments later, Mr Albanese released a statement applauding his party’s victory.

‘Over the past eight years, through the toughest of times, from the pandemic and the Black Summer bushfires to the floods still inflicting their devastating toll on communities, Dan Andrews and the Labor government have been there,’ he said.

‘They have invested in schools and TAFE, built and upgraded hospitals all around the state and have embraced renewable energy.

‘The transformation of the Victorian rail network over the past eight years has been nothing short of incredible, with the construction of the Melbourne Metro, boosting V-line services for the regions and removing level crossings.

‘They have a comprehensive plan to grow the economy, create jobs, build infrastructure and revitalise a health system that has carried the state through a once-in-a-century pandemic.

‘I look forward to continuing to work with Dan and his team every day to deliver for Victorians.’

The win means Dan Andrews will go on to serve a historic third term as leader of the Victorian Labor party and become the state’s longest serving ALP premier.

His government will retain its majority, with ABC election analyst Antony Green calling at least 48 seats for the ALP.
