He briefly returned to Everton later that year, before moving Stateside to play in the Major Soccer League for D.C United in Washington – although, Wayne then left to return to the UK after a year-and-a-half with the club.

As of January 2020, Wayne became a player-coach for Championship side Derby on an initial 18-month deal.

Derby manager Phillip Cocu has said of Wayne’s addition: ‘He is a great influence. When a player of his quality is in the team during the game, apart from his quality as a player, the influence is bigger because you have direct contact.

‘We are happy he is playing for us. You see the players, they see his quality, react and make the runs because they know he will deliver the pass and it is important for the team.’

As well as being dad to Kai, he shares sons Klay, six, Kit, four and Cass, two, with wife Coleen Rooney, who he has been married to since 2008.
