Welsh Parliament faces fury over putting tampons in male toilets in case trans people need to use them

The Welsh Parliament is facing a backlash over putting tampons in male toilets in case trans people need to use them.

It has emerged the period products are on offer at the Senedd, which also houses gender-neutral facilities and showers.

According to the Telegraph, a sign in the toilet says: ‘These products are provided free of charge for all those that need them, following negotiation on your behalf by the Senedd Commission Trade Union Side.’

Welsh Conservative member Tom Giffard said: ‘It’s shocking that the Senedd can’t figure out the difference between a man and a woman – particularly at a time when they’re introducing gender quotas for elections.’ 

The move emerged after Welsh ministers set themselves on a collision course with Westminster by demanding new powers to ease gender self-identification rules.

Mark Drakeford’s Labour administration wants negotiations about taking on responsibility for overseeing how people change their gender.

But the move by Labour, in conjunction with Welsh nationalists Plaid Cymru, is likely to set up a furious row with Tory ministers in London. 

They are already bracing for legal action with Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon over a law reducing the age at which people can change gender from 18 to 16.
