What to wear this weekend: FEMAIL picks out the best statement skirts for effortless style this season

WARDROBE STANDOUT

Simple, classic, understated. That sums up my wardrobe pretty well. I only buy pieces I’ll wear multiple times and for years to come. Basically, my dress sense is, well, boring. Skirts — especially all-singing, all-dancing statement skirts — couldn’t be less me. When and where will I wear one? And, even if I do find an occasion, it’s hardly going to see a lot of use.

STRIKING SEQUINS

They should be a no-go zone but this season I can’t resist. There was beaded and sequin embellishment at Prada, striking purple metallic leather at Saint Laurent, layered silk taffeta at Miu Miu and pleated print satin at Versace.

NOT JUST FOR PARTIES

It turns out that once you own a statement skirt, you find the occasions to wear it and your skirt doesn’t need to be ‘saved for best’. Something eye-catching, fun and a little bit bonkers like this tiered tulle skirt from Boden (right) will even look great at the office, dressed down with a cashmere jumper.

PERFECT WITH KNITS

Whether it’s for day or night, I’d let your skirt do the talking and keep the rest of your outfit simple. You’re bordering on fancy dress with some of these designs and, as fun as that is, it’s probably not the look you’re after. So wear yours with simple knitwear in neutral colours and understated footwear, be it trainers, loafers or an elegant court shoe. What are you waiting for?
