A wild boar has mysteriously strolled down a suburban road as bemused driver were forced to stop before they ran it over.

Bizarre footage taken in Balclutha, New Zealand shows the animal pausing on the road before being prompted to move by the driver who edges forward.

Carwyn MacAulay got his phone out to film the moment the pig trotted down the street on Tuesday morning.

Mr MacAulay was driving home after his night shift at the Silver Fern Farms in the Freezing works, when he spotted the animal.

‘I was driving home and seen a large object on the road from a distance and thought who the hell is playing silly buggers,’ he said. 

‘When I saw it was a boar, I was surprised and thought no one is going to believe me.’

He was mainly surprised at the species of animal present on the road, as wild boars aren’t common in suburban Balclutha.

‘No one has seen wild pigs in Balclutha before, maybe a sheep or two,’ he said.

Mr MacAulay continued to follow the pig, filming while still stunned at what was unfolding.

‘I followed it down some back streets while taking snapchats for mates. It headed towards the river bank. It cut through a small industrial area and disappeared.’ 

The video has drawn hundreds of Facebook comments, as people react to the peculiar moment with one commenter adding

‘At least it wasn’t flying,’ one wrote.

Locals also commented saying they too spotted the animal. 

‘That was hanging around cedar tree lodge this morning, thought I was seeing things,’ one wrote. 

‘Well if you’d have got out, walked up to it, one either side, you could’ve played piggie in the middle,’ another added.
