A wine firm has designed an artificially intelligent sommelier to deliver drinkers their perfect bottle of red or white.

The company Vagabond hopes its subscription service will become the industry’s equivalent of Spotify, which is known for recommending users new songs to listen to based on other tracks they’ve enjoyed in the past.

Customers will initially complete an ‘onboarding session’ by rating five 100ml taster bottles sent to their home.

The wine app – called SOMM – will ask them to rate their favourite characteristics, such as big versus subtle flavours or if they prefer earthy or fruity tastes.

The choice of wines is based on the habits and ratings of customers who have visited Vagabond’s ten tasting bars in London and Birmingham.

Based on its database of other people’s preferences and the answers the customer initially gives, the AI will create a bespoke box of wine, with future selections continuing to be refined every time a new set is sent out.

Founder Stephen Finch said the AI system had ‘more than sufficient data to generate the subscriber’s wine profile with high confidence’.
