Wolves boss Nuno hits out at coronavirus rules after he is left without Conor Coady for Saints clash

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo hits out at coronavirus protocol after he is left without Conor Coady for draw against Southampton despite captain testing NEGATIVE for Molineux clash

  • Nuno Espirito Santo has been left frustrated by the coronavirus protocols
  • Wolves boss was left without a number of key players, who were self-isolating
  • Romain Saiss is self-isolating after returning a positive result in the last fortnight
  • Conor Coady was also out after had contact with a person who tested positive

Nuno Espirito Santo criticised the coronavirus rules that force players to self-isolate for 14 days if they come into contact with someone who tests positive for the disease.

Premier League stars must follow the government guidelines in these matters, meaning they have to follow the mandatory isolation period even if they test negative during that time.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday that daily tests will be offered to close contacts of people who have tested positive in England, as a way to reduce the current 14-day quarantine.

Wolves earned their point against Southampton in the absence of captain Conor Coady – the first time he has missed a league game in more than three years – after he had contact with a person who tested positive during the international.

The centre back was still allowed to watch the Premier League clash from the stands at Molineux on Monday evening.

Defender Romain Saiss is also self-isolating after returning a positive result in the last fortnight.

Substitute Pedro Neto’s equaliser meant Theo Walcott’s first Southampton goal in nearly 15 years was not enough to take the visitors third in the table, but Nuno was keen to express his frustration with the regulations.

He said: ‘Conor will start the next training session with us.

‘I don’t know how many more days’ isolation Saiss has, but it’s too much time. Conor has spent so many days in isolation [even though] during the two tests he took he was negative, and he has already had the virus [in March].

‘The protocols make it very hard for all the teams. Fortunately the international breaks have stopped until March and that will allow the teams to prepare better.’
