Working girl! Here’s how to update your office style for the new year

With the dark days of January well and truly upon us, we’re busy finding ways to brighten up the gloomiest month of the year.

And if one of your resolutions for 2020 is to kick things up a notch in your career then do it in style, with the ultimate capsule workwear wardrobe.

Finding something to wear to the office every morning can be a real chore. And we’ve stared at our cupboard of clothes for longer than we care to admit, trying to put together an appropriate look.

So stick to these style essentials and your mornings will be less manic. Plus, you’ll be confident as you put your career strategy into action this year.

It’s all about a modern take on tailoring and a grown up version of femininity. Here’s how to nail it.

Make 2020 your most stylish year in the office yet…

Invest in a blazer

A sharply cut blazer is an absolute must-have.

Not only can it form part of a matching trouser suit, but it can be styled with a whole range of other separates.

Layer over a T-shirt, blouse, fine knit or shirt to add gravitas to your look.

And you can even wear a blazer over a dress, so it really is an easy-to-style piece worth investing in.

This year go for a boyish double breasted style, preferably in a check pattern. And you can never go wrong with a tuxedo jacket; ideal for taking your office look from day to night.

Have a selection of shirts at your disposal

Like a blazer, a smart shirt or blouse is a short cut to smart office style.

They’re great for working with suits, but will also dress up jeans and more casual skirts.

A classic white shirt is obviously a must, but add in some prints to your collection too.

Polka dots never go out of style and the same goes for animal prints. And for brightening up an otherwise boring day, opt for some block colours like mustard yellow and fuchsia pink. They’ll really pop next to black trousers.

Accessorise for success

As with all outfits, it’s the accessories that can really make a workwear look shine.

So build up a range of statement belts and bags to add the ultimate finishing touches.

A wide belt is perfect for wrapping around a blazer, or add a skinnier style in a bold shade to plain black dresses.

And when it comes to office arm candy, a work bag should be smart and roomy and that’s why a tote is a good option.

A tote is sturdy and large enough to carry a laptop as well as your wallet, cosmetics bag, book and maybe even your lunch box and gym kit. So it’s a no-brainer.

Ditch the skirt suit for sophisticated dresses

Skirt suits are a bit too 1980s for our liking.

Instead update your workwear with a selection of smart dresses. Midis are great, as they’re not only on trend but are perfectly suited to a day of meetings.

But don’t be afraid to go slightly shorter and even above the knee. As long as your dress isn’t only just covering your modesty, you’re golden.

Ribbed knitted styles are great for winter and of course you can wear any length of dress with opaque tights during these freezing months, switching to bare legs when spring arrives.

Step up in style

And finally to footwear.

Court shoes may traditionally be seen as what a woman in business wears to the office, but we all know that it’s entirely dependent on what kind of business you’re in.

Plus, nowadays, expecting women to spend all day in stilettos is considered backwards looking. So for a comfortable and stylish alternative, step up in new boots this year.

Knee highs look great with midi skirts and dresses, as well as over skinny jeans if your workplace is less formal.

Or ankle boots are ideal for styling with pretty much any outfit you put together. Block heels will lengthen legs while still being wearable all day and if you want to add a bit of fashion edge then why not try a preppy Chelsea boot?

And mix things up with flats. A pair of masculine brogues or preppy loafers will look chic with trouser suits and tailored pants.
