Young Remainers want Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to be at King Charles’ coronation, poll finds

  • YouGov sought the opinion of more than 3,000 Britons about the coronation
  • One in two Scottish people said they have no plans to celebrate the ceremony 

Young Remainers would prefer if Prince Harry was accompanied to his father’s coronation by his wife Meghan, a new YouGov poll has found. 

In a survey of more than 3,000 Britons, 64 per cent of answered they are not at all interested or not very interested in the event. 

The poll found that 64 per cent of those aged more than 65 cared a great deal or a fair amount about the ceremony. This compares with 18 per cent of those aged between 18 and 24. 

A staggering 75 per cent of those in the lowest age group are not interested or not very interested in events in Westminster. 

Only six per cent of remainers care a great deal about the coronation, compared with 15 per cent of those who supported Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Yet, a majority of flag-waving leavers are not interested in the coronation, with 21 per cent answering they are not at all interested and 32 per cent insisting they are not very interested. This compares with 71 per cent of remainers. A slight majority, 51 per cent, of Tory voters appear enthusiastic about the coronation. 

Four out of ten Labour voters are not at all interested with a further 34 per cent not very interested. 

The YouGov figures do not include Northern Ireland, but contain data from across England, Scotland and Wales. 

The most enthusiastic region about the former Prince of Wales’ new job is Wales, where 16 per cent expressing the greatest interest. Yet, even with such support, 59 per cent are either not at all or not very interested. 

One in two Scottish people have no intention of celebrating the coronation despite the additional bank holiday. Almost one quarter of Welsh people are very likely to celebrate.

One third of Britons, according to the survey believe neither Harry nor Meghan should go to the coronation, though 46 per cent are ambivalent, expressing no particular preference. 

One fifth of Labour Party supporters want to see Harry and Megan at the party compared with one in ten Tories. Only nine per cent of Leave supporters would be happy if the couple both attended. 

One in five Londoners would like the couple to fly to the capital, while one in two residents of the capital are not bothered either way.
