Mike Tindall will be the first member of the Royal Family to appear on ITV reality series I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! – and wife Zara could jet out to Australia to join him in just over two weeks.

The husband of the King’s niece arrived at Brisbane airport this morning following speculation that he was to join this year’s line-up.

Tindall’s £150,000 deal comes after he was criticised for starring in adverts for Domino’s Pizza and Amazon Prime.

Mike Tindall could be joined by his wife Zara Phillips, who is expected to jet out to Australia to support her husband as he appears on I’m a Celebrity. The couple are pictured in June at Wimbledon

Dressed in a baseball cap, sunglasses and jeans, the 44-year-old former England rugby player refused to say whether he had sought permission from the Royal Household to appear on the popular show. Asked about this, he replied: ‘It’s not something I need to tell you though, it?’

Sources working on the programme say that they are expecting Zara – Princess Anne’s daughter – to fly out to the Gold Coast when the I’m A Celeb contestants start to be evicted around ten days into the series.

Typically, families and friends of the stars stay at the five-star Versace hotel close to the camp so they can be on the set when the contestants get evicted from the show.

One source said: ‘There has been much talk about Zara flying out and people are fully expecting her to be there.

‘What a great scene that would be. Mike is the first royal to appear on I’m A Celeb so for Zara to be there when he comes out would be a great moment.’

A spokesman for the couple declined to comment on whether or not 41-year-old Zara – King Charles’s eldest niece – would be going.

Speaking as he touched down following a 20-hour flight from Heathrow airport, Tindall said that his wife of 11 years is happy for him to be joining the programme, saying: ‘I wouldn’t be doing it otherwise.’ He added that Australia is a ‘special place’ as he met Zara in Sydney.

He added: ‘It’s probably one of the longest times we’ve been away completely with no communication. When you go away you still have communication, so that’s obviously going to be the hardest bit.

‘You’ve just got to get your head around doing what you’re doing and try and win some stars and stuff and see where you go from there. I want to win stars because I want to eat.’

Speaking of his fears about entering the jungle, Tindall said: ‘The hunger is always going to be the biggest thing you have got to worry about but I’ve also got three kids so dealing with lack of speak comes with the territory.’

Tindall will be joined in the jungle by nine other celebrities for the series, which begins on November 6. They include 80s singer Boy George, DJ Chris Evans, Lioness Jill Scott and ITV news reader Charlene White. Others will arrive throughout the series, with comedian Seann Walsh expected to be among them.

It is the first year since the pandemic that the show has been made in Australia. In 2020 and 2021, ITV were forced to use Gwrych Castle near Rhyl in north Wales.
