Declan Rice joked with Jesse Lingard following their dispute over who should take a penalty during West Ham’s 3-0 victory over Sheffield United.

Lingard, who has made a great start since joining the Hammers on loan from Manchester United, won the penalty after a rash challenge from Chris Basham.

After scoring two goals against Aston Villa, the 28-year-old was determined to take the spot-kick but Rice was the designated penalty taker.

Both players exchanged words before Lingard reluctantly let Rice take his spot kick, which he converted to give West Ham the lead.

Lingard was the first to celebrate with the goalscorer and the two shared a hug and joke over the incident.

After the game the pair had a laugh about the incident as Rice posted a video to his social media account mocking Lingard as he was in the bath.

Rice joked: ‘He knew he had to give me the pen,’ which gets a laugh out of Lingard who points at Rice before the two shared a high-five. Rice captioned the video with ‘all love brother’.

The 22-year-old also made reference to the incident during his post-match interview with BT Sport.

Asked about the debate over penalty duties, he revealed: ‘I just said to Jesse, ‘Look, the gaffer, I don’t want to be battered by him and by the assistants in the changing room if I don’t take it’.

‘I said I don’t want to be that guy that looks like I’m taking the ball off you, but I said, ‘I’m on them mate so obviously can I have the ball’.

‘I was buzzing to put it in the back of the net and, more importantly, we’ve got the three points.’

Despite his dispute with the designated penalty taker, Lingard did receive praise for how he handled the incident.

Former Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand told BT Sport: ‘It shows there’s a maturity, some players would have sulked in that situation.

‘It’s an ego thing, he puts that ego to one side, but more importantly he’s been the bright spark in this game for West Ham.’

Goals from Issa Diop and Ryan Fredericks sealed what was a comfortable victory for the Hammers who climbed into the top four above Liverpool.

Ferdinand added: ‘It was a tremendous performance by West Ham and they didn’t really get out of first or second gear.

‘They did enough and had a guy in Jesse Lingard who is a different character, in a different set of form right now and he’s the one lighting this stadium up at the moment.

‘If West Ham and Manchester United are going for top four, he’d want to have an impact because he’s a winner, he’s competitive, he’s got that drive.

‘He needs to make it a position where West Ham have to bid for him at the end of this loan spell. He’s on the right track. If you get that every week you’d want him.’
