Astonishing moment a pod of friendly dolphins swim alongside a jet skier in the sea near Brighton

  • Nicholas Coleman, 31, filmed the pod of dolphins a mile from the Brighton coast
  • Two young dolphins and two adults played beside his jet ski as he rode along
  • First time he has seen dolphins off the South Coast in three years of jet skiing

A lucky jet skier was visited by a pod of dolphins who swam beside him in the sea off West Sussex yesterday afternoon.

Nicholas Coleman, 31, from Shoreham-by-Sea, filmed the ocean dwellers as they followed his jet ski in the water.

The avid jet skier took a video of the two adult and two baby dolphins just a mile off the coast of Brighton at around 1pm yesterday.

The dolphins break the waves just a few feet to the left of Mr Coleman’s jet ski as he points out the ‘babies’ and ‘big ones’.

They swim under the jet ski and dance in front of the ski’s nose as he whoops in excitement.

Mr Coleman slows down the jet ski to avoid hitting the animals and take in the rare sighting.

The dolphins then dart to the right of the ski, breaking the waves again before disappearing into the sea.

Mr Coleman said: ‘This is the first time I have seen dolphins of the south coast of England in three years of owning a jetski.’

Last year, members of Sussex Yacht Club, based in Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, spotted a pod of dolphins near Southwick power station.

Club member Lauren Willis saw the pod at around 9am on June 2 by her boat, while tug boaters also spotted dolphins by Newhaven Port earlier in April 2019.
