Azeem Rafiq’s legal case against Yorkshire is set to take place before a separate investigation into his accusations of institutional racism at the club is concluded.

The Leeds employment tribunal is scheduled to hear the former England Under 19 captain’s claim for discrimination and harassment on the grounds of race remotely over two days, starting on June 16.

Rafiq is also claiming victimisation and detriment as a result of his efforts to address racism during his time on the playing staff at Headingley.

The 30-year-old went public last August, but the probe was delayed when his legal team objected to the ‘independence’ of certain panel members.

Of the inquiry stretching several months into 2021, Rafiq’s lawyer Asma Iqbal said: ‘At best, the delay is tone deaf when former players, coaches, and umpires are bravely coming forward about their dreadful experiences.

‘At worst, it shows fear of the investigation’s possible findings and the impact they might have on the employment tribunal. Failure to act quickly and decisively only risks legitimising racism.’

A Yorkshire spokesperson said: ‘It’s been very important to the investigation team, the panel and the club that this process be conducted sensitively and thoroughly.’
