Ben Chilwell ‘undergoes another Covid-19 test’ after breaking coronavirus protocols

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell ‘undergoes another Covid-19 test’ as he misses out on England’s match against Belgium due to illness

  • Ben Chilwell will miss England’s game with Belgium with a non-Covid illness
  • He also missed 3-0 win over Wales after breaching Government’s ‘Rule of Six’
  • Defender attended Tammy Abraham’s party with Dortmund star Jadon Sancho
  • Abraham and Sancho are set to link up with  squad following coronavirus tests
  • FA medics are taking no risks over defender Chilwell who will face a second test

Ben Chilwell has reportedly undergone a further Covid-19 test after he was prevented from reporting for England duty due to illness.

The left-back missed England’s 3-0 victory over Wales after breaking coronavirus protocols after he and Jadon Sancho attended a surprise birthday party for Tammy Abraham.

Despite Chelsea‘s new £50m signing testing negative for the virus, he was unable to link-up with Gareth Southgate‘s squad due to a non-Covid related illness.

Now the Daily Mirror have reported that England’s medics are taking no chances and have instructed for him to undergo a second test.

The 23-year-old’s second test is also negative, then he could still be involved in England’s final game of the break against Denmark on Wednesday.

Chilwell, Sancho and Abraham attended a surprise birthday party for Abraham at the Chelsea striker’s flat last weekend, with the gathering having around 20 guests, therefore breaching the ‘Rule of Six’ limit put in place by the Government.

Following England’s 3-0 win against Wales, manager Gareth Southgate said that Chilwell, Sancho and Abraham would be permitted to link up with the squad if they passed a UEFA-mandated coronavirus test.

Chilwell’s reintegration into the squad has taken longer due to his illness.

Even with Chilwell unavailable again, Southgate has several options to consider when deciding who he should select at left back against Belgium.

Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka started against Wales, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles is also capable of playing there and Kieran Trippier was used out of position on the left side of the defence during the last set of international fixtures.

Abraham issued an apology last Sunday, saying: ‘I arrived home to find a small surprise gathering.

‘Though I was totally unaware this was planned, I would like to wholeheartedly apologise for the naivety shown for the organisation and attending of this gathering.

All I can do now is learn from it, apologise to everyone and ensure it never happens again.’
