Brighton boss Graham Potter ‘targeting January move for Dan James’ with Welsh winger down the pecking order at Old Trafford under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Brighton boss Graham Potter wants to borrow Dan James from Manchester United to boost the Seagulls’ survival bid, according to reports.

Potter nurtured jet-heeled James as the livewire winger impressed at Championship side Swansea before joining United for £17million in 2019.

The jet-heeled youngster has featured only three times for United this season and has not appeared for the club in the Premier League for almost two months.

That has alerted Potter to his potential availability and the opportunity to resurrect a loan bid that was turned down by United last season, The Sun has claimed.

James will be particularly keen to play regular first-team football ahead of his Euro 2020 campaign with Wales next summer.

Albion signed Adam Lallana to provide width and creativity in the close season, but the former Liverpool favourite has been troubled by injuries.

Potter’s struggling squad have scored more than one goal in just one of their last nine matches, failing to find the target in their last two as part of a four-game winless run.

Leeds could also be waiting in the wings for James, having come close to signing him before he moved to United.

The 23-year-old scored in the 4-1 home win over Istanbul Basaksehir in November, but has only featured for 33 minutes of Champions League football so far this season.

He has not scored a league goal since August 2019 and has not provided an assist in the Premier League since last December.

James credited Potter with saving his career after the progressive coach’s arrival at Swansea in 2018, a year after the wideman had a loan spell at Shrewsbury.
